I am happy to say that all five of the robins in this year’s nest have hatched. Here is a family photo:

Part of the reason I am sharing this photo is because of the size difference between the birds. The five of them were hatched over a 36 hour period. Look how much bigger the one at the bottom of the frame of the photo is than his siblings. He is eating whole food now, at least some of the other birds are still on a regurgitated diet. Now that everyone is hatched the next step is to see if they will all adequately be fed.

Hopefully they will get better looking as they age LOL! We had a new just outside our door one year. I watched them continually but in the end I missed their first flight and never saw them leave. Good for you for taking the time to do the set-up!

Yeah, they aren’t so pretty right now are they? Last year, I caught all but one leaving. They didn’t go far though. They were just hiding out in our hedgerow for the first few days learning to fly, so I got some cool pictures of that too. I am so excited to be doing this project again this year.

I’ve had a mama mourning dove who has been faithfully sitting on her nest on my front door lamp. This morning I stepped outside and the nest was on the ground, no mama, no eggs. Some sort of tragedy happened there last night or early this morning.

That’s too bad. It does happen though. My oldest found a freshly hatched robin on the ground a few days ago. It wasn’t clear why it was out of the nest, in fact she said she couldn’t even find the nest. It’s sad to see but there really is a lot that can go wrong.

Yes, first I was concerned that they all might not hatch, now I am wondering if they will all get fed, five is a huge number in this case. The two adult birds both look healthy and seem to be bring back lots to eat for everyone so far.

I always birds would be born with full feathers. They look so delicate and with big eyes it seem.

It would make sense to think they would be born with some, but nope, not a single feather. Amazing how quickly they sprout out though.
