I was intrigued when I walked past The First United Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple and saw a series of stained glass windows at eye level. This one in particular caught my eye, so I thought I would share it:
The story here is that the third building this church had that was at this location burned down in the Chicago Fire of 1871. The other windows told of other parts of the church’s history. I think this was the first time I have ever seen a fire like this in stained glass.
This post was written in response to Thursday Lingering Look at Windows.
Cheers!
That is a very interesting stained glass.

Such a graphic depiction of the fire, very realistic colours

Yes, even though it is behind another plastic panel to protect it, it is quite vivid.

Most unusual, and very vibrant colours..

Yes, the colors were quite something. I guess part of what made it stand out as well is that I was eye-level with it.

That is true. I don’t think I have ever seen a historical even depicted in stained glass. I am familiar with the typical religious themes and some praising the bueaty of nature, but no events like that. That is interesting. I will have to search out the church when I am in Chicago.

While you are there, right next to it is a statue of a “robot pagan fertility goddess” really, I’m not making that up.

Yes, it really captures our eyes in the way fire is portrayed on that stained glass.

And the flames were lively indeed. That fire would have been a terrifying spectacle I think.

You know, I didn’t even see the fire till I *read* that bit! My eye was just completely drawn by the gorgeous vivid shades of blue and purple – I am so predictable – that’s what my wardrobe’s like, now my garden, and now I can’t even see pictures if they’re yellow/orange/red? Tut!

The blue was a fabulous shade of blue 🙂

The whole series was really. Usually you think of a church have scriptural based stained glass; this whole series was a history of that particular church building. Very different.

Different for stained glass and looks quite intricate.

Also, it was interesting to me that they weren’t that large. I guess I usually think of stained glass for churches as rather large works of art.

Thanks for sharing your photo of our stained glass window. If you are ever in the neighborhood again, please stop into the church. The Sanctuary is open 7:30 am to 9 pm to the public. There are some very interesting windows, one with famous Chicago buildings in it. Thanks again!
