I enjoy walking through cemeteries and looking at grave markers. Today I found one that I would not want to run across at night:

This iron lady sitting at the foot of the cross I found somewhat intimidating. I think it is the stern look on her face.
It was a tough grave marker to get a photo of as well, so I figured I was going to have to take some liberties in the editing process to get the image that I wanted. Lighting was a issue. Although it was a sunny day, the marker was in the shade. Also the grey stone was very light in color and the lady was a very dark green. I took a bracketed shot. So one exposure in the middle, then one a stop higher and one a stop lower. With those three shots on the computer I put them in Photomatix and then created an image using the painterly setting. With that finished I opened the photo in Photoshop, cropped it to straighten in a bit and then sharpened it. Here is the original middle exposure:

What do you think of my final interpretation? Do you enjoy walking through cemeteries? If you do, and happen to be in St. Louis Missouri I would recommend Bellefontaine, it is a beautiful place.

Once we were stopped by the cops as we were walking through a cemetery in the middle of the night. That was pretty surreal….

That is a little odd in that I wouldn’t really expect to find cops there.

I’m not sure if she is stern or displaying profound sadness. I occasionally enjoy a wander amongst the monuments in our local cemeteries. We have St.Pancras and Islington just 1km away to the east – the largest cemetery in London. And there’s Marylebone cemetery around 1km to the west. Lots of photo opportunities in both 🙂

I often go to the cemetery when we are visiting a new area, it is an interesting history lesson.

I found it hard to tell you did work on the photo, well done. The final one actually kind of resembles a painting, I think. The green hues around her face are very interesting. Maybe it’s the natural colour of the stone, or perhaps moss. Rarely do I walk through cemetries here in Melbourne, too quiet for my liking and I’m afraid something will jump out at me from behind the bushes 🙂

Yes, the way the green tones turned out I really liked. It was interesting in person too, just because it was not uniform in color or texture.

Maybe when you back there might be more green…or less on the statue. It’s always fun recreating what we see with our eyes with photoshop or similar editing software 🙂

This is a very dramatic statue, Amy. I think that she looks really sad, as though she is in mourning. Maybe she’s supposed to represent Mary Magdalene who sat at the foot of Jesus’ cross. 😕 I love your edit of the photo.

Yes, without an exact description it is hard to say who she is supposed to be which is kind of interesting in its own way. There were benches as part of the monument but I really felt that her presence didn’t make it seem like a place that I would want to stop and linger.

very cool take on the theme – and I think it takes a unique person to appreciate graves – cos it creeps some folks out for sure – and we once visited a very old cemetery in Vermont – it was after a wedding we went to and the cemetery was so unique. anyhow, cool shot 🙂
