I have been in Utah for a few weeks. One thing Utah has in abundance is beautiful red rocks:
ISO 800 185mm 0ev f/16 1/30
I took this photo at about 6:30am at Bryce Canyon National Park as the sun was starting to work it’s way through the rocks. I used an f-stop of f/16 because I wanted to show detail in the rocks. That required a fairly low shutter speed, but I wasn’t too worried about that because I was fairly sure my subject matter wasn’t going anywhere. The light was the variable, shots taken a few minutes earlier on the same settings were much darker.
I bracketed this photo and when I edited it, created this HDR image in Photomatix Pro. The individual photos turned out a bit flat as compared to what I was seeing in person. I think this HDR version above is closer to what I saw. I was thinking as I was taking pictures that this landscape just looked better in person than in photos. So after taking my shots, I put my camera away and just stood for awhile watching the sun come up.
Have you ever had a moment like that where you just put your camera down, because you were sure the images wouldn’t do the moment justice? This week’s photo challenge is Roy G. Biv, the colors of the rainbow. I love taking photos with all sorts of colors, but I also think that sometimes the rainbow is best experienced without the camera. What do you think? This is a beautiful shot, Amy. Good clarity and I think the light of dawn helped you capture such a glowy image. When I’m out shooting sunsets and the occasional sunrise, I absolutely have to put down my camera for a moment or two to take it all in, soak up all the beauty in front of my eyes. Each scene in front of us is a once in a lifetime moment…and I really do want to see it for myself without anything else distracting me. As for rainbows, I haven’t seen many in my life 😀

This is a beautiful picture Amy … in my eyes you’ve completely achieved the colour palette of Bryce Canyon … I was enamoured with that National Park when we visited and would love to return . Such striking rock formations , trail walks …

Lovely photo. How wise of you, Amy, to put your camera down after this shot and just enjoy the view. I think too many are so busy clicking away that they miss these moments. 😉

This is a beautiful shot. I was wondering if for the bracketed shot, did you change the shutter speed for each shot? Or just changed EV value?

Hmmm…Got that. On SLR cameras, does the EV values have to be changed manually for different values for a series of shots of same subject or can it be set to change automatically in continuous mode so that we don’t have to change the camera or the tripod?

In this case I was using a Canon 50D and that has a setting which will do the bracketing for you. It shoots one at 0, one at -1, and one at +1. I was not using a tripod for this particular shot.
