While in theory I do love living in an area where there are four distinct seasons, I will admit that I often long for warmer weather during the winter. So on a particularly cold day this past week, I headed to an indoor garden to take some photos:
This is an Aphelandra, a version of which is available for sale on Picfair, and here is what the photo looked like originally:
It’s beautiful as is but when I was editing it, I wondered if I could make the yellow tips glow in a black and white version. I am new this week to Lightroom, so I went ahead and did some of the editing there. Specifically for this final version I looked at all the black and white presets that were available to me, picked the one that I liked, and then adjusted from there. Prior to doing that though, I did start with my color version in Photoshop. I chose to do my cropping and sharpening there, and then did the black and white transformation in Lightroom.
It’s been a bumpy few weeks for me. I’m in the process of taking an on-line course in Lightroom, so that hopefully I will be able to use it fully. It means a lot of stops and starts in my work as I have to google instructions on how to do things, and then look at those instructions again a few days later as I am still learning and don’t yet have even the simple things down by rote.
How are things where you are, are you enjoying the current season or do you find yourself longing for another one? Do you like the black and white edit? Feel free to leave a comment below.
Cheers!

I like the color version but maybe that is because my flower garden is covered with snow at this time of year.

Yeah, the pop of color is nice this time of year.

I find LR very intuitive, having never used photoshop. Lovely shots.

So, there’s hope for me then, I’m hoping to get it up and running fairly soon.

I am a colour person, but in this instance I am drawn to the black and white version. Beautifully composed in the end result, and it looks like the flower is glowing at the tips.
Good luck with the Lightroom course. With most software, there is always so many terms and tricks to pick up, not to mention navigating around it 🙂

Thanks, I think it is worth the time and effort to get it right since I will be using it a lot. But it is an outlay of time that is for sure.

I don’t know about you, but in order for me to learn a new software or learn how to do something with the software, I have to have a go at it many, many times. Practise, practise, practise until the steps come naturally to me.

I love your black and white edit, I have a thing for black and white photography, I think it gives a more dramatic effect! Here in grey gloomy South of England I’m looking forward to the warmth of the sun 😊😊

I agree, black and white done right does tend to be dramatic. It’s a sunny day here, which is lovely, so I’ll hope for the same for you 🙂

I really like your B&W edit, Amy. I also admire you for finding time for the Lightroom course, while I just bumble along with it. It certainly makes the water mark easy, as well as sharpening, straightening and cropping of course 😀

Right, watermark, sharpening, and straightening I have sorted out. Now as for the rest of it…

Excellent. Though I like the b&w version better, because the flower has a somewhat soft glow that you don’t see in colour.

The black and white edit is great but once I saw the warmth of the color and edges, it gets my vote. I do like your header so much, too.

I like both shots. I’m enjoying both the season of nature (still in winter with hints of spring) and the season of my life. Good for you, taking on a new thing with Lightroom. I keep thinking of getting that or Photoshop, but haven’t done anything about it yet. Enjoy.

I’m familiar with Photoshop, but needed a new cataloging system, so Lightroom seemed the obvious choice for me.

Love the B&W version and laughed at your first comment about wanting 4 seasons but disliking cold. Exactly the thought I included in my Seasons post this week LOL. Spring seems to be arriving here, hope the same is true for you!

I love the black and white edit. The colour one is also beautiful. Very vibrant and bright.
As for me, I’m at the end of summer (Brazil), soon going into autumn. I love the Spring and Summer. Autumn is still nice and warm here, but not a fan of winter (funny coming from a Canadian, born and raised). Having said that, I’m very glad I live in hot, sunny climate.
Lovely blog you have.

Thank you very much for your visit and kind comment. It is kind of funny that you are Canadian and not a fan of winter, perhaps that was a factor in your moving though?

Gorgeous shot, Amy. I love both, but especially the b & w. It’s true that I’m longing for warmer weather now as we’re in the middle of a snowstorm, but since the weather was so unpredictable this winter, I’m actually enjoying the snow. 🙂 Hope you’re enjoying your corner of the world.

Yes , it is interesting . The mind anticipates Summer already . Wanting to go to same places , and see things anew . Here is the result of what I posted today ( https://jounisakariblog.wordpress.com/2016/02/26/19795-a-summer-memory/ ) . It snowed today here in Finland … 🙂

Unfortunately, your link didn’t really work, for reasons that I don’t quite understand. I thought perhaps though, that you intended you link to these snowy images that you posted:https://jounisakariblog.wordpress.com/2016/02/27/day-19679/ I hope I got that right!

Oh, I’m new to WordPress, and I am learning how this works . When I date, after publishing, a posting back to the date when the photograph was taken, the link changes? So, one should manually change the date to “2015/06/22” in the link that I shared previously, that did not work, to find the Round-leaved Wintergreens. Sorry for the inconvenience. Happy photographing, cheers !

Ok, try these directions:https://en.support.wordpress.com/shortlinks/
What you are going to do is get a link for the post you want, then you can copy and paste that link into your response here. So, if you follow the directions, open the Round-leaved Wintergreens post, in your editor and then follow the other directions. Once you have your link, try pasting it in a response here and we will see if that works.
If it works properly, it allows you to direct people to your post without changing anything about the original.
Maybe give it a try?
