I was out on a walk on Sunday which usually means I would have my Canon 50D with me. But the weather report and a look outside advised against it, so I left it at home. However, at our starting point the weather took an unexpected turn for the better. I took my phone out of its waterproof case (Ziploc bag) and took this photo while we were out:
This house was beautiful, but I really felt that it would make for an interesting image in black and white. Here is the final version:
One of the reasons I chose to convert to black and white is that I felt that the photo had a lot of details in it, details that would be easier to see and compete with each other less in black and white. The photo also needed cropping, there was a bit too much hedge and grass, elements that were not really adding anything to the photo. In between taking the photo and doing the editing, I was also inspired by this black and white photo challenge. In her image, Paula has made the countryside beautiful in black and white, and has captured a reflection of her subject in the water. It’s a beautiful image and worth your time to check it out.
What do you think of my edits? Do you like the fact that it is black and white? Do you check the weather to make a camera decision? Feel free to leave a comment below.
Cheers!
I love the black and white. The beautiful detail of the building is overshadowed by the green in the color version. This amateur has learned something today – thanks.

I love your photos. I cannot quite decide which one I like better – if I had to, perhaps the colored one because of the green…

The green really is something isn’t it? I guess because of all the rain.

Looks like a cover for a Gothic novel. Nice.

Yes, it would work well for that I think 🙂

Somehow, the B&W seems less foreboding. The detail is certainly enhanced. Love it, Amy

Thank you, I really think the edit did a lot for the details.

Amy, I really think you were right about moving the image into black-and-white for highlighting the features of the building, etc. It’s lovely in color, but the eye is going a lot of places. Very nice! (Fits in nicely with my #beingthemoment theme for this week – details! he he)

I agree, it’s a lot of details but somehow I think black and white makes them easier to process in this case.

I consider myself a City Girl before when I was growing up but since getting married I love the Countryside more as long as I can still go to the City in an hour or less. 🙂
Your photo is so nice, homey.

Nice to have that flexibility to be both a country and city girl 🙂

There’s so much green, it almost is monochrome to start with. B/W was a good choice to enhance the details.

Yes, there had been a lot of rain, so a lot of lush green.

The black and white conversion is perfect to my eye, the color photo is just a very nice photo, but the B & W turns it into something else, a slightly spooky Gothic shot. B&W enhances the sky and pushes the building detail up front. I suppose it’s part of the learning curve and playing with photo editing to see what effects enhance the images you want to see Lovely to learn from your posts. Thank you.

Thank you for your kind comment. I do agree that photo editing is something you have to experiment with. There are a lot of options and really the only way to see if you like the end result is to go ahead and starting trying different options. The beautiful thing about digital is you can always just get rid of the versions that don’t suit your vision.

B&W…it makes the photo look like one you’d find in a history book. Love it! 👍🏼

That photo speaks much louder in black and white than in colour.

Yes, but I guess we have to wonder how true any of the stories are.
