It’s been a busy week. Today it’s back to England weather, but last week was gorgeous; my unprocessed photo folder overflows, a beautiful problem to have. This weekend included a walk with friends that went through a barley field:

The edited version was produced in Lightroom. In the crop tools there is an “angle” option which allows you to drag a line along what should be the straight horizon and then creates a crop from there. As with many edits, I sometimes think that I am gaining and losing. In this case, the edited photo is straighter. The original however, has a quirkiness to it that I kind of like. I’ll point out also that this photo is breaking one of the rules of photography. Generally it is considered bad form to include part of a person, you should either include the whole person or crop them out entirely. It’s a good rule, but I think there is a carefree feeling to this photo that allows that rule to be broken.

Waist deep in wheat, wading through a veritable sea of green … it’s a stunning shot and I am stunned that it was Britain this weekend given all the plaintive cries of water water everywhere I am hearing from my homeland today! Chapeau for a great post.

Normally I prefer to edit my photos as little as possible, but like you I straighten the horizon for fear of nauseating my visitors as well as cropping now and then. Rules are there to break them and certainly in this photo, as the arm suggests that the scene continues outside the picture which gives a broader impression and generates more interest. So I would say: continue to break the rules and you will get exciting photos.

Definitely liked what you did with it, and that part person in the photo just adds to the spontaneity that is often adventure. It’s like I am there wading in the grass with you in the final photo. I generally straighten quite a few of my photos. Sometimes you don’t see how not straight a photo is until you see it on the computer.

I agree, it is easy to take an off-kilter photo. Luckily that is a pretty easy fix.

Yes, and you are losing other things usually from the edges of the photo, things you might want to retain. There is no question that cropping via any method is something that requires a bit of thought.

I prefer the edited version of the panorama, it seems easier on the eye, although I like the quirkyness of the original image too :o)

I think what I like about the original is that it reminds me of the moment, it was a bit of quirky moment and a quick shot. Definitely one of those things that a later viewer might not appreciate as much! and something that I think needs to be kept in mind if you are editing with the thought of sharing.

Amy, I was really struck by a feeling in the first photo of being IN the field. Like being immersed in the barley. Somehow with your friends at the right it reminded me of the poppy field scene in the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie! Otherworldly!

It was a bit of an otherworldly experience, it was kind of interesting to listen to all oohs and ahhs as we were walking through this field.

Nice photo. I prefer the first one because I prefer horizons horizontal/natural, even though the resultant crop may chop off things. It sounds like you had a great day out.
