Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting

It’s fair to say that I had been waiting for months, eager to head off on holiday to Scotland.  We had tickets for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. I’d been once as a child, and it was a fond memory, so I was looking forward to seeing it again as an adult.  The show did not disappoint, we even had fabulous weather.  As I was reviewing my photos from the evening I decided I wanted to create an image that suggested a memory, like the vision I had in my head from when I was a child.  This is what I came up with:

ISO 3200 18mm f/11 1/40 sec

Here is the original:

ISO 3200 18mm f/11 1/40 sec

You can see that I’ve made quite a few changes.  The biggest was in the overall tone of the photo, I wanted to accentuate the golden hues and quiet the blues a bit. I started with a photo filter from Analog Efex Pro, and edited from there.  One of the nice things in Analog Efex Pro is that there are a lot of options and a lot of sliders, so you can easily start with a preset and work from there.  Back in Photoshop I cropped and straightened the photo.  Then I used the healing brush tool and the spot healing brush tool to remove the radar/metal tower thing that is on the castle.  The healing brush allows you to pick another section of the photo and paint it over what you want to remove.  I used that first to take the tower out.  I then used the spot healing brush tool, to make the sky in the area match the rest of the photo better.  The spot healing brush looks at the surrounding area and then makes a best guess.  It was good for the clean up effort in this case.

I like the dreamy feel to the first photo, I think I managed to get a version that was what I had set out to do.  What do you think?  Have you been to Scotland? It’s a beautiful place. If you happen to be in Edinburgh in August, check out the Tattoo, it’s a unique show. Feel free to leave a comment below.

Cheers!

  1. I actually really like both photos, and they are their own individuals. The first one does come across as dreamy, something you might actually see when you close your eyes and dream or recall a memory – and hopefully you did bring that child vision image to your satisfaction 🙂 Never been to Scotland but have heard so much about the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Watched a few videos of them online and always enjoyable. I think I might do that again sometime soon 🙂

  2. I love the idea of photographing something as an adult, and then taking that image and processing it to reflect your memories of seeing it as a child. Of course, only you can ever know how successful you are 😺

  3. It works. It’s definitely a dreamy look, and even looks medieval. Like you were there in those times, even though the bleachers were unlikely that large back then.

    Good post-prod.

  5. Wow, Amy, are those viewing stands off to the left? (and to the right) It looks like quite a crowd. What is the performance like from the stands, can you see individuals’ playing? It’s always enjoyable to view your “before” and “after” images. Thank you!

  6. Beautiful! I’m in the US but my paternal great grandparents were Ulster Scots. I grew up with a love of the pipes and the tartans and all things Scottish. I wish I could visit! Maybe one day…

  7. The edited shot looks so like a scene from a fable – knights in shining armour could appear :). Lovely effect. I’ve visited Scotland and it’s landscape is full of the ethereal and can grip the imagination. The rich pageantry and heritage really inspires :).

    • Tickets go on sale in December, this year 1 December. I bought ours a few days after that because I already had an idea of what seats I wanted and knew they would sell out. I also knew the dates we were going to be there. I checked about a week or so before our show and the only seats left were the super expensive package style tickets. While we were in town I noticed there was an office where you could go to attempt to get day of tickets, basically tickets that had been sold once and then the original buyers were not going to be able to make it. The Fringe Festival, which runs at the same time in August would provide you a lot of interesting street photography opportunities as well.
