When you are in Rome, you have to go to the Trevi Fountain. That’s what all the books and the internet says. So, I did what I was told:
There’s the photo to prove it. Here’s the thing. Everyone goes to the Trevi Fountain. Even on a day where rain was threatening and it was the middle of the week and it was October. It makes getting a photo without at least fifty people in it difficult. So, with that shot above, I just went with as much fountain and as few people as possible. One person’s forehead isn’t too bad considering the crowd. A quick crop removed the forehead and the building next to the fountain. As much as I liked the blue of the water of the fountain, standing there, taking the photo, I was thinking black and white.
I’ve sharpened to photo a bit and then worked with the tone curve a bit to make the darks just a touch darker and the whites just a touch whiter.
I wasn’t feeling like this photo need a whole lot. There is a reason why everyone visits, it’s a beautiful fountain and doesn’t really need a whole lot more embellishment than it already has.
Have you ever stood in front of a scene in full color and thought, “yup, black and white it is”? Have you been to the Trevi Fountain? if not, you should when you go to Rome, the internet says you should, and the internet isn’t wrong 🙂 Feel free to leave a comment below!
Cheers!

Thank you very much. We were there for about a week. Just so much to see and do. Living there for a year would be a completely different experience, much different than just being a tourist.

Some places are just too popular. Nice shot/edit.

Yes, it was a bit hard to enjoy because it was overrun.

LOL your tongue is stuck squarely in your cheek this morning Amy! Nonetheless you’ve created a beautiful image. I did visit Trevi and remember being underwhelmed!

Yeah, guilty as charged. It’s a lovely fountain but the crowds and the pushing and shoving were enough to put me off.

Beautifully enhanced – B&W is great here! And – I cannot say how sorry I was last time we visited, because my memories of the fountain were from the 1980’s, and now I wanted to see it again…But, the whole fountain was now a building site, it was to be restored to its former glory. No water, no possibility to enjoy the artwork.

I suspect you would enjoy seeing it again then, to do a bit of a comparison. It is beautiful, but I found the crowds to be a bit much.

Never been to Rome but I would absolutely go to the Trevi Fountain, no matter what day 🙂 🙂 And no, I never think ‘black and white’ without prompting. I can see why you might prefer it though.

The list of things to see in Rome is quite long. You could do a lot of walking posts just for the city that is certain! I rarely think about black and white when I am shooting which is why I mention it in the post, it was an “unusual for me” kind of thought.

I like the final image which seems to contain the essence of the fountain. I agree with your perception about black and white.

I must admit I prefer the colour photo, but then I must still grow into monochrome

Thank you very much for your honest thoughts on this. One of the reasons I enjoy this challenge is that I usually prefer a color image, so this is a way of thinking a bit differently.

I enjoyed seeing the 2 versions of the photo. Yes, this looks like a must-see when on a Roman vacation. I’ve never been there but can just imagine the amount of beautiful art inside and outside. It’s on my Bucklet list. Such a long, long list.
And, no – I’ve never thought of a B&W photo while in the midst of taking a color one.
Something to think about though. Great post …

Honestly, the bucket list just in Rome could be quite long, there is no shortage of things to see there 🙂

The photo reminds me of all the uncountable tourists (including me). I am sure none of us had a proper photo 🙂
Anyways it’s really special.

Yes, the crowds were really something else, even on this day that was nowhere near as crowded as it gets during the high season.

Great choice for the challenge, Amy. 🙂 I know what you mean about the crowds….we felt overwhelmed by some high-traffic tourist spots, like the Vatican. Still, I’m glad I visited them. But I’m not sure I’ll go back.
