Chilling Out in Rome

When you are in Rome, you have to go to the Trevi Fountain. That’s what all the books and the internet says. So, I did what I was told:

ISO 640 17mm f/11 1/80sec

There’s the photo to prove it.  Here’s the thing. Everyone goes to the Trevi Fountain. Even on a day where rain was threatening and it was the middle of the week and it was October. It makes getting a photo without at least fifty people in it difficult.  So, with that shot above, I just went with as much fountain and as few people as possible. One person’s forehead isn’t too bad considering the crowd. A quick crop removed the forehead and the building next to the fountain. As much as I liked the blue of the water of the fountain, standing there, taking the photo, I was thinking black and white.

I’ve sharpened to photo a bit and then worked with the tone curve a bit to make the darks just a touch darker and the whites just a touch whiter.

ISO 640 17mm f/11 1/80sec

I wasn’t feeling like this photo need a whole lot. There is a reason why everyone visits, it’s a beautiful fountain and doesn’t really need a whole lot more embellishment than it already has.

Have you ever stood in front of a scene in full color and thought, “yup, black and white it is”? Have you been to the Trevi Fountain? if not, you should when you go to Rome, the internet says you should, and the internet isn’t wrong 🙂 Feel free to leave a comment below!

Cheers!

  1. Beautifully enhanced – B&W is great here! And – I cannot say how sorry I was last time we visited, because my memories of the fountain were from the 1980’s, and now I wanted to see it again…But, the whole fountain was now a building site, it was to be restored to its former glory. No water, no possibility to enjoy the artwork.

  2. Never been to Rome but I would absolutely go to the Trevi Fountain, no matter what day 🙂 🙂 And no, I never think ‘black and white’ without prompting. I can see why you might prefer it though.

    • The list of things to see in Rome is quite long. You could do a lot of walking posts just for the city that is certain! I rarely think about black and white when I am shooting which is why I mention it in the post, it was an “unusual for me” kind of thought.

  3. I enjoyed seeing the 2 versions of the photo. Yes, this looks like a must-see when on a Roman vacation. I’ve never been there but can just imagine the amount of beautiful art inside and outside. It’s on my Bucklet list. Such a long, long list.
And, no – I’ve never thought of a B&W photo while in the midst of taking a color one.
Something to think about though. Great post …

  4. Great choice for the challenge, Amy. 🙂 I know what you mean about the crowds….we felt overwhelmed by some high-traffic tourist spots, like the Vatican. Still, I’m glad I visited them. But I’m not sure I’ll go back.

Stunning! I love Rome and its architecture. A perfect combi of history and beauty that still inspires many people. I wish I had cool photos from this place somewhen.
