52 Week Smartphone Challenge: Week 22

Well here’s a thing that happened this past week:

ISO 100 f/2.2 1/33sec 4.2mm

It’s odd to look around at what has been our home for the last four years. We arrived as strangers and are leaving during strange times. The photo above was shot on my iPhone and edited in Luminar. It has the Luminar Look, Quay Fade, applied at 47%. I also edited the vignette.

Your thoughts on the photo or edit are welcome below.

Cheers!

When I need a bit of serenity, I go for a walk:

ISO 25 f/2.2 1/1672sec 4.2mm

This photo has Luminar Look, Camden Desat, added to it and then a bit of luminance.

The challenge this week asks for a landscape image using negative space. To me, this image is as much about the solid blue as it is the more variant tones of white in the clouds. The simpler, more even, blue is an important canvas for the texture of the sky:

ISO 25 f/2.2 1/12821 sec 4.2mm

The photo has the Luminar Look, Somerset, applied to it. I’ve also cropped the image slightly and added a vignette. Your thoughts and comments are welcome below.

The topic this week is weight or mass. I’ve taken a few liberties with that. This is what attending Mass looks like to me these days:

ISO 200 f/2.2 1/17sec 4.2mm

It’s like a lot of things for me with this lockdown, it’s not terrible but it’s not great either. As with a lot of things it has been an adjustment.

This week’s challenge took me a while to sort out in terms of how to approach it. It seemed to be asking for balance and a Renaissance painting. I did a bit of clicking around before even taking the photo. I looked at these images, that turned up in a search of “Accidental Renaissance” which to some extent go me to thinking about the subject matter of the photo. I later watched this tutorial about using a texture to create a painterly effect. These two things were part of how I ended up with this image:

ISO 25 f/2 1/237 sec 4.2mm

I do feel like this edit may have wandered a bit in terms of the challenge, but I still liked the outcome. The initial edits included a custom white balance, increasing the luminance and using the sky enhancer slider. I did crop and straighten the image as well. On a separate layer, I added a custom texture following the linked instructions above.

This week’s theme, Shadow, is one that could be interpreted  in many different ways particularly at this time. I call this photo, Stepping Into My Space:

ISO 25 f/2.2 1/1166sec 4.15mm

What’s going on in this photo? Quite a bit. I’ll divide it into pros and cons.

Pros: I’m out on my daily allowed by the government walk, and it’s a beautiful day. The other shadow is my walking partner/teenager and we are both healthy. This is a friendly dog.

Cons: This is not my dog, it’s not on a lead, and I am both allergic and scared of dogs.

For me, this photo has a bit of conflict and tension in it. The original file lent itself well to a square edit, so I went ahead and used Hipstamatic to create the image. After an initial  shuffle of random filters, which the app will do for you with the touch of a button, I settled on a combination I liked and then did some additional edits to come up with this final version.

I have given this photo the title, “Any Given Trail”:

ISO 25 f/2.2 1/2959 4.2mm

It’s my addition to this week’s challenge which has the theme, Anonymous. Shot on my daily walk, it could be any number of the trails that surround my village. I am grateful to have access to them.

The edit was done in Luminar. I did not straighten the photo, leaving that bit of reality of “photo taking while walking” in. The filters applied are a grouping that I saved and named the look, “Amy’s green and red vintage”.

This week the theme is Center Frame. A few additional instructions were provided and the photo is also to include the ideas of isolation and loneliness. Wow, considering that all the themes were set well in advance, this one certainly seems pretty timely:

ISO 25 f/2.2 1/1350sec 4.2mm

This photo, taken near my home, certainly speaks to the near-empty landscape. To add to the feeling of loneliness I’ve added the Luminar Look, Cold Film, and a fairly significant vignette.  You can let me know in the comments below if you feel this is successful or not.

The theme listed for this week’s challenge is New Beginnings. Well, it was a bit of a new start here with further restrictions on our day to day life. I’m grateful to be able to leave the house once a day to go for a walk. Despite all the obvious signs of new beginnings with the flowers all starting to bloom here, I went with this actual sign:

ISO 25 f/2.2 1/4808 sec 4.2mm

I did all my basic edits to this photo and then went to add a Luminar Look to this photo. There are all a whole series of looks grouped as “Stunning Portraits”. Well now, the idea of this being a portrait struck me as too funny of an idea to let pass so I have selected the look “Fashion Punch Faded” and applied it at 49%.

I’m a bit behind again for this week’s challenge, but I liked this photo enough to go ahead and publish late anyway. The theme for this week was fill the frame:

iPhone with Hipstamatic

This photo was shot within the Hipstamatic app with no further editing.
