A Quiet Moment for your Monday

I took this shot a few weeks ago for my digital photography class.  The assignment was to show a fore-, middle-, and background:

ISO 100 50mm 0ev f/7.1 1/30

ISO 100 50mm 0ev f/7.1 1/30

Even though it was pretty cold when I shot this photo, I found it very soothing.  I hope you do as well.

The only “technical” thing I did with this shot was use a tripod.  In this case the tripod not only made it possible to have a lower shutter speed but also made it easier to compose the shot in camera.

Cheers!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unique

Well, sometimes things just work out.  It happens that one of my assignments last week was to take a photo from a unique angle.  This weekend unique is the theme for the WordPress photo challenge.  So here is my unique photo:

ISO 2500 50mm 0ev f/2.8 1/500

ISO 2500 50mm 0ev f/2.8 1/500

The view of a hockey player getting ready to put on their mask in the locker room.  It took some fiddling with the camera settings to get what I was after here.  I had to handhold the image, so it did have to be a fast shutter speed.  I wanted to blur everything except the cage, so low f-stop. High ISO because the locker room has pretty horrible lighting.

I have a lot of different versions of this on different settings, but this one was the best.

Cheers!

Similar Photos, Different Settings

One of the first assignments in my Digital Photography class this semester included taking two outdoor shots of the same scene, one using ISO 100, and one using ISO 2000.  Both had to turn out properly exposed.  Here are my two shots:

ISO 100 50mm 0ev f/10 1/13

ISO 100 50mm 0ev f/10 1/13

ISO 2000 50mm 0ev f/10 1/320

ISO 2000 50mm 0ev f/10 1/320

Pretty similar right?  I used a tripod for both scenes.  In order to get the correct exposures I had to change the shutter speed in addition to the ISO.  The higher the ISO went the faster I had to set my shutter speed to get a good image.

I really liked this pumpkin photo.  I tweaked it  a little bit in Aperture and have put it on my website as a print and also a card.  They can be found in this gallery if you are interested in taking a look.

Thoughts on my pumpkins or your experiences with ISO and shutter speed?  Feel free to leave them below.

Texture in the Sky

As part of my black and white assignment for digital photography class this week I took this image:

ISO 500 50mm 0ev f/13 1/640

Just a robin or two hanging out in my backyard.  I did exposure bracketing with this image and used Photomatix for my editing and processing.  While it is true that the one robin looks a bit blurry when you magnify this image, what I really like about it is the textured look of the sky and tree together.  There is a pretty big range of grey to white in the sky, I like it, but what do you think? It does create a very light patch in the right corner of the photo and that might bother some.  Feel free to leave your comments below.

Black and white this week

It is interesting that both my digital photography and design class are dealing with black and white this week.  While I don’t do a whole lot with black and white photography, I do enjoy it.  Here is one of my images from this week:

ISO 1000 50mm 0ev f/3.2 1/160

Some of you that read the exif data I include might wonder why I used an ISO of 1000 and the answer is simple.  I forgot to change it when I was setting up for these photos.  I did use a bracketed exposure for this image and then used Photomatix to edit.

What was most interesting to me in making this image is that the color version showed the frost on the leaves, while in black and white you pretty much can’t tell it’s there.

A bit of color

We are working with color in my digital photography class.  Here is one picture that I turned in for that assignment:

ISO 400 50mm 0ev f/10 0.8s

I shot this in color.  I was out shooting that particular morning because it had been raining and I was looking to get some water drop photos.  It was a bit of a bust that way, so I thought I would try something different with the photos I did have and the result is what you see above.

I used a tripod, and not a super fast shutter speed.  There was not a whole lot of light out, but I set the white balance to shady, just to warm up the image a bit.

In Aperture I changed the image to black and white.  Then using one of the brushes, I brushed some of the color back in.

What do you think? Feel free to leave a comment below.

Single Fall Leaf

This past week I was working on a color assignment for my digital photography class as well as a natural symmetry themed contest.  This photo fits in both of those categories:

ISO 100 50mm f/2.2 1/160

I tried a bracketed exposure for this shot of -1,0,1 for editing in Photomatix.  Once I had put the photos in Photomatix, I picked a version which I felt was pretty natural looking because part of what I was wanting viewers to see was the way the red was basically imitating the overall shape of the whole leaf.  When I was composing and editing the shot I was trying to blur the background as much as possible.  I liked the green color, but didn’t want any competing detail.

Any thoughts?  feel free to leave them in the comment section.

Cheers!

One Last Night Photo

Just for fun I made this image for my night photography assignment:

ISO 160 50mm 0ev f/18 94sec

It’s a 94 second exposure with a laser pointer for the smile.

Have a happy Friday!

Night Photography in the Early Morning

Of the series of pictures I took for my night photography class, this one is probably pushing it in regards to when I took it.  It was taken at 6:26am, so the sun was thinking about coming up, but you could still some of the night sky:

ISO 160 50mm 0ev f/18 189sec

As you can see from the camera data, it is a really long exposure, 189 seconds.  That is Venus you can see in the sky.  I really like the way the color turned out in this photo.

A Flower for Your Monday

I have been working on night photography for my digital photography class and here is a photo from that assignment:

ISO 160 f/18 0ev 50mm

This photo has an exposure time of 105 seconds.  My camera was on a tripod and I was using my remote release shutter.  During the exposure I used a laser pointer to color in the flower.  I will also tell you that even though this was night photography, I took the photo in the very early morning, while it was still dark.

Cheers!
