January Squares: Stretch Towards the Light

This is a photo for one of those days:

ISO 25 f/2.2 4.15mm 1/40 sec

The kind where you really have to stretch for natural light, because winter is just like that sometimes:

ISO 25 f/2.2 4.15mm 1/40 sec

I often enjoy editing simple photos like this in Hipstamatic. The one has the Florence Lens and Ina’s 1982 film filters added.

January Squares: A Light for Your Path

This photo was taken on a visit to the Luxembourg American Cemetery:

ISO 320 f/11 18mm 1/1250sec

I liked this image as a color image, but I was interested in making alterations to the color as a way of making the photo more impactful. This photo was shot with my Canon 80D which means that there is a lot of data there to work with. The edits I did are in Luminar:

ISO 320 f/11 18mm 1/1250sec

I started with the crop. This took a bit of fiddling, there were several decisions to be made in terms of what to include or exclude from this edit. I’ve then applied a look called Blue Sky, which is mostly black and white except for muted blue tones. In order to bring the gold back into the photo, I applied a mask and painted just the front of the grave marker. I’ll also mention that I did not apply a vignette to this particular edit which is unusual for me.

The Instagram version is here:

Added to January Squares, Day 20. I’ve also chosen the American holiday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to post this photo as a nod to choosing to do the right thing and to stand for others even at great personal cost.

Cheers!

January Squares: Golden Light

This photo, shot with my iPhone, caught my eye because of the light:

ISO 200 f/2.2 4.15mm 1/33sec

When it came to the edit, I wanted to also accentuate the golden tones. It has the Luminar Look, Dripping in Gold added to it and a vignette:

ISO 200 f/2.2 4.15mm 1/33sec

January Squares: Plenty of Sunlight

Just to prove that the sun does come out in England because it is a bit hard to believe this is possible this morning, I have this photo in my archives:

ISO 25 f/2.2 4.15mm 1/4525 sec

For the edit in Luminar, I started with the crop. I’ve boosted the shadows and the luminance slider on green. Then I added a vignette:

January Squares: Grounded

I come across some interesting things while I am out walking. On this walk it was a small private airstrip:

ISO 250 f/11 24mm 1/1000 sec

These two small planes looked pretty much ready for flight. There were a few others with tarps and whatnot that looked like some prep would be needed before they took to the sky. It was a beautiful day and I really like the expanse of this original scene. I decided though to tell a different story with this particular edit:

ISO 25 f/2.2 4.15mm 1/506sec

Much more about just this one plane. The Luminar look applied to it is called Aerial Dramatic. Though when applied to this photo I think gave it a feeling of nostalgia and a hint of abandonment. I’d be curious to know if it struck you with that same feeling?

January Squares: Moonlight

One of the fun things about this January Squares challenge has been to the opportunity to edit photos in a different way and revisit files.  Today’s file is one that was shot in March of last year:

ISO 100 f/6.3 120mm 1/250 sec

Shot from my backyard with my Canon 80D and the longest lens I own which is a 70-200mm. I started by googling recommended camera settings and gave it a try. Not bad I thought. Here is the resulting square edit:

ISO 100 f/6.3 120mm 1/250 sec

There is the obvious crop and in Luminar I added the Natural look.

January Squares: Mislight

Mislight: To lead astray with a false light. Frankly, I felt like this trail marker fit that description:

ISO 25 f/2.2 4.15mm 1/33 sec

Wait, which way were we headed? Sometimes when I am editing in Luminar I pick looks to apply based on their name. For this one, I thought a look called “Road Tripper” was appropriate:

January Squares: Ampelmännchen

Or literally, little traffic light man:

ISO 25 f/2.2 4.2mm 1/422sec

I took several photos of these pedestrian traffic lights while in Berlin, just because they are different. For my square edit in Luminar, I added the Enigma look. On another layer, I boosted the green luminance and sky enhancer and added a vignette:

January Squares: Light a Candle, Say a Prayer

I love looking through churches and coming across lit candles. I’ve always associated candlelight with prayer:

ISO 320 f/2.2 4.15mm 1/17sec

I tend to like to edit photos like these in Hipstamatic. In this case, The Jane lens filter has been added:
