Bright Field, Old Church

This is the kind of image I don’t get much of here in England, one taken on an intensely sunny day:

ISO 100 12.1mm f/5.0 1/320sec

But it has been a different type of summer here, one that is warm and very little rain. This photo was taken with my point and shoot.  I liked the image but did want to edit it a little bit.  The photo below is what I finished with:

ISO 100 12.1mm f/5.0 1/320sec

The crop was where I started. I wanted to lose the lower left corner of the field and bring the church in just a bit closer. I’ve also used the tone curve to make the colors a bit deeper and I applied a vignette to the corners.

What do you think of the edit, does it retain its sunny day feel? Feel free to leave a comment below.

Cheers!

The Landscape in my Driveway

This is what I created:

ISO 400 50mm 0ev f/18 1/10

ISO 400 50mm 0ev f/18 1/10

It is a photo of my driveway that was partially covered in ice the other day.  Here is the original shot:

ISO 400 50mm 0ev f/18 1/10

ISO 400 50mm 0ev f/18 1/10

I thought the ice and small bubble pockets would make an excellent alien landscape.  The first thing I did was crop out the parts of the photo that just show the bare driveway.  Then in Aperture I converted it to a sepia image.  I also sharpened it a bit.

It was fun to create, hope you enjoyed taking a look.

Cheers!

Night Photography in the Early Morning

Of the series of pictures I took for my night photography class, this one is probably pushing it in regards to when I took it.  It was taken at 6:26am, so the sun was thinking about coming up, but you could still some of the night sky:

ISO 160 50mm 0ev f/18 189sec

As you can see from the camera data, it is a really long exposure, 189 seconds.  That is Venus you can see in the sky.  I really like the way the color turned out in this photo.

Landscape shot with a fountain

I took this last week while I was working on a landscape photography assignment:

ISO 200 f/22 1/100 28mm

I liked the view of the fountain against the detail of the statue.

Landscape Photograph

In my digital photography class we are covering landscape photography at the moment.  I also bought Photomatix this week.  What you get is this photo:

ISO 200 f/22 1/13 28mm

I used a tripod to get the original  three photos that were shot in color.  I combined the images and put them in black and white in Photomatix.  Fun stuff!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Near and Far

The tides at the Bay of Fundy say “near and far” to me so for this week’s photo challenge here is a shot:

ISO 100 f/8 1/800 28mm

If the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia isn’t on your bucket list, it would be a place worth adding.  Take your camera, because with tides like this there are new landscape photos to be taken hourly.

Cheers!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Purple

Purple.

Purple Haze, that is the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the topic for the Weekly Photo Challenge that WordPress puts on.  Here is my purple haze:

ISO 400 28mm f/4.5 1/1000

This a picture I took on a train of the passing Canadian landscape.  I have taken some liberties with the color in post-editing.

Here is a more “standard” purple:

ISO 100 4.3mm f/2.7 1/125

Cheers!

For Today: It’s Black and White

At some point this year my photography club will have a competition with “Landscape: Black and White” as its theme.  I don’t do a lot of black and white images, but we were hiking and I came across these rocks that I thought would look better in B&W than color.  Here is the image I came up with:

ISO 1600 4.3mm f/2.7 1/60

I took this with a point and shoot and without and tripod.  I have done a bit of darkening and cropping. What do you think?

Cheers!

Landscape Photography with a point and shoot camera, a revision of sorts

Wow, that is a clunky post title!  I wrote this post that had a landscape picture taken in black and white with my new point and shoot camera.  I got some feedback on that post that got me to thinking and led to this post. I had taken the original shot in part because I had just read that one of the competitions in my photo club this year was going to be landscapes in black and white.  That’s cool, because I shoot almost everything in color, and it will give me something different to think about.

So, I took the landscape in B&W, and thought maybe I would edit it later.  I use GIMP to do my photo editing. I included the link because it is open source software that means you can use it at no cost.  I also use YouTube to find tutorials to help me use it more effectively.

So, I received some specific feedback in the first post about how to change the image. So, I thought, why wait till “later” to edit, when I had been given an interesting suggestion now. If you are interested, here is a link, to the blog of the person who suggested the edit.  The link is to a recent posting of his that I enjoyed.

Here is my edited landscape:

Here is the original:

I think I do like the edited version better.  Thoughts?

Cheers!
