For this week’s travel theme fresh I’m back in the classroom. A freshly hatched chick:
ISO 3200 50mm 0ev f/4 1/25
And outdoors with newly hatched robins:
ISO 800 4mm 0ev f/2.7 1/60
These photos were taken with different cameras. The chicken photo was taken with my Canon 50D. The lighting was quite dark but I wanted to give the photo a soft light look. So the ISO is high, the f-stop is low, and the shutter speed is slow. The chick was resting it’s head on the shell and was being very still, so the slow shutter speed was not a problem.
The robin photo was taken with my point and shoot camera using the macro setting on the camera. While I didn’t do any post editing on the chicken, the robin photo has been cropped and sharpened.

These robins were outside my kitchen window, and mom and dad were looking after them. It was amazing how quickly their feathers grew in.

The robin photos are always a question of waiting. This nest is the one that is right outside my kitchen window and so I can keep track of the adult robins schedule. There was always a brief time in the morning when they would both be gone. That was my chance to get a photo like that. I would only have a few minutes though, so I would have all my camera stuff set up and ready to get put in place. My thought was to stay out of the adults way as much as possible so that they wouldn’t be upset by my presence.

Wow! Look at that. I’ve never seen images of baby birds before. They look so helpless! It’s a shock they survive and grow up! So sweet. Great image.

Quite a difference. You achieved the soft focus look. Have you tried soft focus filters on your lenses?

No, filters are something I’ve not really worked with yet. I did get a set of infrared filters, but I have not done much with them yet. In the case of the chicken photo that soft filter like effect was actually achieved thanks to the incubator that the chickens are in. Just one of those happy moments where it just works.

Hi Amy – I like the mood of the soft focus photo – and resting on the shell – nice capture.
also, the pale, softer focus of the first photo made that second photo feel even more colorful – and side by side like that – well the first one just made the left side lighting come alive more in the second one – nice take for “fresh”
